Let’s get straight to the point. Safety training videos aren’t the most engaging type of videos. They talk about protocols and technical workplace guidelines team members need to follow to prevent workplace accidents, a very important but rather plain topic.

But at Visual Culture we love challenges.

Through the years we have learned that the magic word for this kind of scenario is creativity. That’s right. Thinking outside the box is what has been helping us create videos for the last 20 years and in this article, we are going to share the secrets of how to create engaging safety training videos, differently. Let’s dive in!

Story and format: two important elements that will make your safety videos engaging

No matter what kind of video you are creating, a little story will always help you connect with your audience. Safety videos are no exceptions. Your story needs to grab team members’ attention from the beginning and motivate them to watch the video till the end.

Once you have identified the story you want to tell, choose a format and add a spin to it. For example, if you choose an animated video style, add a format that is entertaining like a game or a fun multiple choice exercise that the team members have to undergo during the video.

Remember, the challenge is to convey technical information and keep the viewers interested in the topic so make it fun, easy to watch and engaging.

The important element you need to consider when creating an animated style video safety

If you have opted for the animated video style format, ensure that the graphics are professionally created and edited for the story. They need to have great attention to detail, attention-grabbing colours like red and yellow, and need to be edited exactly like a “real” video.

Create a script and hire professional actors to do the voiceovers and give the right personality to your characters. Ensure that all the dialogues have all the nuances that will help you convey the safety information while telling the story and keep the viewers engaged.

How to create engaging safety videos: keep it brief!

In our 20 years of video production career, we’ve been creating many safety videos for different kinds of clients and we have established that the ones that deliver the highest ROI to business owners are short and sharp. So condense your message where possible and aim at the final product that is about 2-3 mn long but that still gets the message across clearly.

At times you may find that some safety training topics require longer and more complex explanations. If this is the case, break down the video into a series of mini videos, addressing a sub-topic or task in each video.
