Life Saving Victoria

CLIENT BRIEF

Life Saving Victoria supports a diverse community of lifesaving clubs, volunteers, leaders, young people and participants across Victoria.

Over a number of years, Visual Culture has worked with LSV to create video content that helps knowledge, skills and experiences reach that wider community.

The projects have varied considerably – from structured training resources for Nippers programs to leadership development, club management, adaptive programs and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing.

While each project has a different audience and purpose, they share an important objective: capturing knowledge and making it accessible to people across the lifesaving community.

OUR APPROACH

Learning and development content works best when it connects information with real people and practical experience.

Our approach with LSV has been to work with the people who understand these programs best – volunteers, club leaders, participants, young people and subject-matter experts – and help translate their knowledge into video that is clear, engaging and useful.

Sometimes that requires a carefully structured demonstration. At other times, the most valuable content comes from creating the right environment for people to share their experiences naturally.

Building a Nippers Training Resource

One of our most comprehensive projects with LSV involved developing a series of demonstration videos supporting the delivery of Nippers programs.

With activities varying according to age, skill level and stage of development, the project required a large volume of practical content to be demonstrated clearly and consistently.

Working on location with children, volunteers and LSV representatives, we captured activities and demonstrations in the environment where they would actually be delivered.

The resulting video series provided clubs and volunteers with a practical learning resource that could support the consistent delivery of Nippers training across the wider lifesaving community.

Making Programs More Inclusive

Our learning content has also extended to supporting LSV’s adaptive programs.

We produced comprehensive video resources designed to help clubs understand how they could establish and deliver an Adaptive Nippers program and create opportunities for participants with additional needs.

The content went beyond explaining individual activities. It provided practical guidance around how clubs could approach the program, work with participants and families, and create an inclusive environment.

Further content explored participation in competition carnivals, helping clubs understand how adaptive members could be included in another important part of the lifesaving experience.

By showing these programs in action, video provides something particularly valuable for learning: people can see not only what to do, but how it can work in a real club environment.

Sharing Knowledge Between Clubs

Not all learning happens through formal training.

Each year, we have filmed LSV’s Presidents Program, where club presidents come together for a weekend of discussion, development and knowledge sharing.

Our role is to capture both the program itself and the conversations happening around it.

Interviews with participants allow presidents to share experiences, challenges, ideas and lessons from their own clubs – turning knowledge exchanged over one weekend into content that can continue to benefit the wider lifesaving community.

We have extended this approach by visiting individual clubs and creating video tours with key team members.

Walking through their club environment, participants can explain different aspects of how their club operates, share initiatives that have worked for them and discuss lessons they have learned along the way.

Rather than presenting one prescribed way of doing things, these videos allow clubs to learn from the experiences of others.

Supporting the Next Generation

Our work with LSV also includes content around its youth programs, leadership days and camps.

These projects give us an opportunity to capture development in a very different way – combining the energy and activity of the programs with reflections from the young people participating in them.

The resulting content can document the experience while also sharing the ideas, confidence and leadership skills being developed through the programs.

OUTCOME

Across these projects, video has become a way of extending knowledge beyond the people who were originally in the room, on the beach or participating in a program.

A demonstration delivered by an experienced volunteer can become a resource for clubs across Victoria.

An insight shared between club presidents can continue to help others after the weekend has finished.

An Adaptive Nippers program operating successfully at one club can show another club what is possible.

And the experiences of young lifesavers can help demonstrate the pathways available to the next generation.

For Visual Culture, our long-standing work with Life Saving Victoria has required us to understand very different audiences – from children and young people to volunteers, club presidents and program leaders – and adapt the production approach accordingly.

The common thread is making knowledge accessible.

By combining structured learning content with authentic experiences from within the lifesaving community, we have helped LSV create a growing library of video resources designed to educate, support and connect its clubs and members.
